What Is a Guillotine Damper?
A guillotine damper is a linear isolation device used to shut off the flow of air, flue gas or process gas within a duct or gas-handling system. Unlike rotary dampers that use a rotating disc or louvre, a guillotine damper uses a flat blade that moves across the duct opening to create a positive isolation barrier.
Guillotine dampers are primarily used for isolation rather than continuous flow modulation. When fully open, the blade retracts from the gas path, helping maintain a low pressure drop. They are particularly useful where equipment or duct sections must be isolated for inspection, maintenance or safe access.
HUBLUXE ENGINEERING distinguishes itself by offering engineered and heavy-duty Guillotine Damper. This makes their guillotine dampers not just reliable but also adaptable to the most demanding industrial environments.
In Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) systems and Gas Turbine exhausts, partial isolation is not an option. When maintenance crews need to enter a duct, they require absolute certainty that toxic gases cannot bypass the valve. Hubluxe Engineering’s Guillotine Dampers provide 100% positive isolation.
Our guillotine dampers can be configured with rack-and-pinion drive systems for reliable operation and reduced maintenance requirements compared with conventional chain-driven arrangements.
How Does a Guillotine Damper Work?
A guillotine damper operates by moving a reinforced blade into or out of the duct flow path. In the open position, the blade is withdrawn from the gas passage, allowing the flow to pass with minimal obstruction. When isolation is required, the actuator drives the blade across the duct opening until the sealing system engages with the blade and frame, restricting gas flow through the duct.
The blade can be operated using manual, pneumatic or electric drive systems depending on damper size, operating speed and plant requirements. For higher sealing requirements, flexible metallic seals, enclosed designs and seal-air systems can be incorporated to reduce leakage across the closed damper.
Positive Isolation with Guillotine Dampers
Guillotine dampers are primarily selected where the objective is to isolate a section of ductwork or process-gas system for maintenance, inspection or safe access. The sealing arrangement is selected according to the required leakage performance and operating conditions.

Standard construction features of HUBLUXE make Guillotine Damper:
MAIN FEATURE:
Guillotine dampers are primarily used in a robust, gas-tight shut-off ducts. Their compact design fits in tight spaces, maintains efficient airflow when fully open, and withstands pressure drops. Available in various configuration options in manual, Pneumatic, Electrical actuated.
BLADE DESIGN:
To minimise the deflection & stress, the damper blade is reinforced. Their weatherproof design prevents gas from leaking into atmosphere. We design blades in various types such as simple blades, structural blades, thermally compensating blades and profiled blades. Our design provides maximum resistance to heat stress, corrosion, metal fatigue and distortion. Application with high pressure or high temperature, an inspection port and view port for high dust loading as well as insulated blades where heat retention or protections from thermal distortion are recommended.
SEALING SYSTEMS:
The dampers are equipped with excellent sealing mechanism where blades are designed with metal to metal or elastic seating systems. Guillotine dampers can be manufactured with simple tadpole seal which can achieve 99% sealing efficiency on cross section. 100% sealing efficiency designs are also possible with fully enclosed bonnets and pressurised seals.
DRIVE SYSTEMS:
Our guillotine damper is a proven and comes with robust rack & pinion design, as compared to older designs such as chains. It is far superior in terms of reliability at the same time its cost effective too. We have wide range of drive options from simple mounted to pneumatic actuation to heavy-duty electrical actuator with safety factors.
