What Is a Diverter Damper?
A diverter damper is an industrial gas-flow valve used to direct process flow gas between the main process route and a bypass route. In HRSG and combined-cycle power plants, a diverter damper can route gas turbine exhaust toward the heat recovery steam generator or the bypass stack. Depending on the design, the damper can be used for flow control, distribution or isolation.
Diverter Damper is basically used to divert the flowing media. These dampers are designed with one inlet and two outlets with ONE common FLAPS. Drive shaft is actuated by the actuator / manual hand wheel which will rotate the blade in 90 degree in Clockwise for close and anticlockwise for Open.
In Combined Cycle Power Plants (CCPP), the ability to safely switch exhaust gas flow from the Gas Turbine to the Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) or the Bypass Stack is critical. A failure here means shutting down the entire turbine—a massive financial loss.
It utilize a Single Pivot Blade mechanism that allows for rapid modulation (under 30 seconds) between the main stack and the bypass. Engineered with high sealing efficiency (using Seal Air systems), our dampers ensure zero leakage of hot gas to the maintenance area, guaranteeing personnel safety during HRSG isolation.
In Mechanical-engineering analogy:
It’s basically like a railway switch for hot gas — instead of switching a train onto different tracks, the damper switches the exhaust gas onto different flow paths.
How Does a Diverter Damper Work?
A diverter damper is used to redirect the flow of hot gas or exhaust gas by directing the flow between two outlets from a common inlet. In a 3-way Diverter damper, one inlet is connected to gas source while two outlets are connected to different process such as HRSG and bypass stack. The internal flap or blade assembly moves in required position to direct the gas towards the selected outlet.
In a gas turbine powered power plant, the diverter is commonly installed between the gas turbine exhaust and HRSG.
During normal heat recovery process, the damper directs the hot exhaust gas from the turbine into the HRSG. The heat from exhaust is then used to produce steam. When bypass operation is needed, the flap changes its position and routes the exhaust towards the bypass stack, allowing HRSG path to be bypassed.
Hubluxe Engineering manufactures these dampers with options to operated it with manually, pneumatic, or with electrical actuator system.
For applications involving high-temperature exhaust or flue gas, the damper can be designed with heat-resistant materials, proper sealing arrangements, and position control to ensure reliable operation.
